Movement I
Objectives:
1. To learn dance movements and body awareness through a variety of standing, floor, barre, and stretching exercises to improve flexibility, coordination and endurance.
2. The development and awareness of ensemble work, stage placement and the improvement of movement memory.
Standards: By the end of the semester, the student, through practical exercises, is able to demonstrate:
1. An understanding of and an ability to execute basic exercises for flexibility, endurance and coordination.
2. The ability to execute different dance combinations and class choreography.
3. An awareness of moving in space, a sense of rhythm, musicality and an ability to create movement.
Movement II
Objectives:
1. A continuation of Movement I, to further develop strength and physical fitness.
2. Further emphasis on rhythm, energy dynamic and moving in space to coordinate movement with breathing.
3. Concentration on the different relationships and dynamics between duo, trio and ensemble movement patterns.
Standards: By the end of the semester, the student, through practical exercises, is able to:
1. Demonstrate improved levels of physical fitness, mental alertness and a stronger awareness of self.
2. Explore and develop the ability to combine movement and dance techniques for the stage.
3. Demonstrate beginnings of a movement vocabulary.
Movement III
Objectives:
1. A continuation of the development of physical awareness, concentrating on principles of energy and alignment to increase stamina and physical presence.
2. The correlation of the voice and body into a workable technique for application of stage roles.
3. Dance styles - waltz, polka, two-step, etc. - in addition to contemporary dance.
Standards: By the end of the semester, the student, through practical exercises, is able to:
1. Demonstrate increased physical stamina, coordination, endurance and better balance between thinking, feeling and moving.
2. Lead a group warm-up and personal warm-up.
3. Express emotions through movement and add to creative exploration through a variety of movement styles.
Movement IV
Objectives:
1. Additional emphasis on total body and voice coordination through the continuation of stretching, relaxation, centring and energizing exercises.
2. Exploration of solo and ensemble movement for dramatic and musical theatre.
Standards: By the end of the semester, the student, through practical exercises, is able to:
1. Demonstrate a working knowledge of the principles of energy, breathing and focus, and the means to increase their physical projection.
2. Demonstrate a movement vocabulary acquired through training in a variety of movement styles and techniques.
3. Explore the needs of group choreography.
Movement V
Objectives:
1. The correlation of all the techniques acquired in the first and second years with ongoing methods for continuing developments.
Standards: By the end of the semester, the student, through practical exercises, is able to:
1. Execute an advanced warm-up for physical and mental preparation, and a personal warm-up for rehearsal.
2. Demonstrate an improved movement vocabulary.
3. Execute different physicalities for character development vis a vis the needs of specific plays.
4. Demonstrate a personal movement style.
Movement VI
Objectives:
1. The introduction of all styles of folkdance and choreography and research of dance styles of different periods.
2. Dance improvisation.
3. Dance with dialogue and the preparation of movement material for character work in connection with the needs of specific plays.
Standards: By the end of the semester, the student, through practical exercises, is able to:
1. Demonstrate the acquisition of a greater sense of focus on physical stage projection and dynamics.
2. Demonstrate a more advanced dance and movement vocabulary.
3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of solo and group choreography.
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the actual techniques and their application to physicalize characters.
